Maryport The Passing Years
by J.D Wells

Binding: Hardback
Pages: 216
ISBN: 0954924010
Price: £19.95 + P & P

The book relates mainly to Maryport which is situated on the West Cumbrian Coast of the Solway Firth and gives an insight into the origin and the history of the town, its rise from being a small inlet at the mouth of the river Ellen, where a modest collection of fishermens huts and small dwellings were situated, it was transformed over a period of time into a busy bustling seaport, with its main industries being coal, iron and steel, it had ship building yards, other numerous industries which included fishing, also its own shipping line which was known throughout the world, the book tells of the Senhouse family, the Lords of the Manor who founded the town and gave it is name, the people of the town itself, the working class, also of the towns eminent people and of the towns seafaring men who were of the finest quality, from the ships masters to the man of the deck. The book tells of the rise and sadly the decline of this once thriving pretty coastal town, the seed of the depression to come was sown in the early 1900s, which led Maryport and its neighbouring coastal towns into the great depression which eventually hit the whole country in the 1930s, a depression to which West Cumbria has to this day not fully recovered.
